Catch Basin Hygiene

By Jim Wirtz

We all learned that taking care of our personal hygiene leads to good general health and well being. The same can be said for our catch basins (sewer openings). When they are kept clear, water flows freely to sewers below and flooding is a remote possibility.

When it rains, many are clear and work properly; others need attention. That’s the responsibility of the resident that has the catch basin bordering their property. (City Ordinance #960407). The resident is responsible for the sewer opening. The city is responsible for the inner sewer opening.

If you find the catch basin clogged, (the water department defines this as “a boxful of debris”), call them at 816-513-8000 with the property address of the catch basin needing to be cleared. Clogged grates or grills (called drop inlets) can also be turned into the water department. If you find the opening of a sewer clogged (called a plastered face), and it borders your property, please clear it.
