Steve and Alison Baker
Jefferson Street |
|
When Alison and Steve married less than two years ago, they needed more room for themselves, their possessions, their cats (his and hers) and future family members. They loved the south Kansas City area where they were living, but moved further north where the houses and yards are larger. They settled on a 1920’s 4-bedroom house at the northeast corner of Jefferson and 73rd streets.
They’ve turned an all-white rental house into a warm and inviting home through the use of bright colors and imaginative details. All the rooms but one now have fresh paint, but the masterpiece is the Tuscan kitchen, with a vertical pot rack designed and built by Steve, ceiling high bookshelves for their extensive collection of cookbooks and a wonderful pantry. A friend added touches of mosaics and tile and Venetian plaster walls. The hall between the kitchen and dining room was hand sponged to resemble Italian stonework with a trellis and faux grape arbor above. It’s fabulous!
Steve is a mechanic with the street department of Kansas City. Mo. Alison is a social worker with the Sunshine Center in Independence. When they’re not busy with work, they love to travel, to attend the theatre and to garden. They have a huge vegetable garden in the back yard and plan to add more beds and perennials each year. In addition to organizing the Christmas Caroling event for WPHA, Alison also volunteers as a docent at the zoo. Steve recently stocked up on light sets during the after Christmas sales and is busy planning a knock-your-socks-off entry for the Holiday Lighting contest next year.
Stop by the Bakers and introduce yourselves. Steve and Alison are very interested in learning more about the history of their house, so they’d especially love to meet anyone who’s lived in the our neighborhood for a while with pictures or memories of the house or its inhabitants to share.
A very warm welcome to the Bakers from WPHA! |
